Best Practices - Personal Systems

Information for securing personal systems

  1. Ensure anti-virus software is installed, active, and updated.
  2. Use a firewall to help protect your computer from remote attacks.
  3. Turn off unnecessary services.
  4. Use tools to detect and remove spyware and other similar threats.
  5. Check for operating system updates and fixes.
  6. Make sure that updates have been installed for all software.
  7. Log off or lock the computer desktop whenever you walk away from your desk.
  8. Manage and protect your computer accounts and passwords.
  9. Secure personal, confidential, and ePHI by using encryption.
  10. Back up your data.
  11. Consider the physical security of your computer and your data.
  12. Do you really know what you just downloaded/installed on your computer?
  13. Beware social engineering scams.
