Best Practices - Administrators

Proper computer security is an ongoing process - use these steps to get started.

  1. Ensure anti-virus software is installed, active, and updated.
  2. Use a firewall to help protect your computer from remote attacks.
  3. Turn off unnecessary services.
  4. Tools to detect and remove spyware and other similar threats.
  5. Check for operating system updates and fixes.
  6. Make sure that updates have been installed for all software.
  7. Logoff or lock the computer desktop whenever you walk away.
  8. Manage and protect your computer accounts and passwords.
  9. Secure personal, confidential, and ePHI by using encryption.

Once your security foundation is set up, stay vigilant!

  1. Backup your data.
  2. Consider the physical security of your computer and your data.
  3. Do you really know what you just downloaded/installed on your computer?
  4. Beware social engineering scams.
